Loans and Lending
54. What is an MFI?
1. Who are CARE International?
CARE International is one of the largest and most respected aid and development organisations in the world. Last year we worked in 84 countries, supporting 1015 poverty-fighting projects that reached more than 122 million people. Click here to read more about CARE’s work.
2. Why is lendwithcare no longer in association with The Co-operative?
The initial three year partnership between The Co-operative and Lendwithcare came to a close on 30 June 2014.
We are grateful to The Co-operative and its members for the valuable support they have shown Lendwithcare as our launch partner and title sponsor, without them we would not have grown to our current scale, supporting entrepreneurs in ten countries with loans of over £4.6 million. The achievements of our partnership will continue to support lendwithcare.org going forward, not least through the ongoing support of The Co-operative’s members, and as such we are proud to recognise them as our launch partner on our website.
Lendwithcare’s first three years have been very successful, due in a large part to support from The Co-operative and its members.
Lendwithcare depends on the generous support of many individuals and organisations without whom we could not continue to operate.
Loans and Lending
3. Are my payment details safe?
Yes, lendwithcare.org uses external secure websites to manage payment to and from your lendwithcare.org account. All your financial details are processed securely with "Secure Hosting" or PayPal. Also see FAQ 16.
4. Will I get the money that I lend repaid to me?
Yes, the money that you lend to each entrepreneur will get paid back to you through instalments. Each loan is accompanied by a repayment schedule; this schedule is a guide to planned repayments. Despite the best support and training provided by the Microfinance Institution (MFI) managing the loan, defaults can still occur. Default rates are very low, less than 1%. So, there is a small possibility that the entrepreneur won’t be able to pay back all or part of your loan, in which case you will not receive the affected repayments. If this happens, we will let you know the reason why the entrepreneur defaulted. Loans are generally provided by many lenders so in the event of a rare default, the loss to a single lender is usually quite small.
See also FAQ 12. Do currency exchange rates effect the loan repayments?
5. How long will it take for the loan to be fully repaid?
The average loan repayment schedule is around 12 months. Each loan is accompanied by a loan schedule on the entrepreneur detail page.
6. Does the entrepreneur receive 100% of their loan request?
Yes the entrepreneur receives 100% of the loan that they requested; no administrative charges are deducted from the entrepreneur’s loan.
7. How do you ensure that the entrepreneur gets their original loan request given that exchange rates move daily?
CARE works with Microfinance Institutions (MFI) in US Dollars who then lend to entrepreneurs in local currencies. Loans to entrepreneurs therefore have to be translated from GB Pounds and this is done using a GB Pounds to US Dollar rate that moves daily.
To cover any exchange differences between when the loan is put on the site and then sent abroad, and to ensure that the MFI and then the entrepreneur receives their full loan request, there is a 10% buffer on the loan to cover exchange rate fluctuations.
Any part of the buffer that is not absorbed by the exchange rate fluctuations between the loan being raised and the loan being sent abroad is repaid to you. This is the first repayment on the repayment schedule.
8. Who bears the exchange rate risk?
You, the lender, bear the exchange rate risk – due to fluctuations in exchange rates. repayments to you may be less than scheduled. See also FAQ 7, FAQ 12 and FAQ 27.
9. How is my loan passed on to the entrepreneur?
Once the loan has been fully funded, CARE International UK will transfer funds to the microfinance institution (MFI). The relationship between CARE and the MFIs used is a long-standing and successful one.
The support, training and loan to the entrepreneur would have already been agreed by the MFI in advance of the loan being posted on the lendwithcare.org website. By doing this the entrepreneur’s plans can proceed without delay with the added benefit that all loans posted are effectively pre-accessed for viability regardless of future funding through lendwithcare.org. This however is not the primary reasons for agreeing a loan in advance of posting on the website. The MFIs’ roles are not only to arrange small loans but to help entrepreneurs by supplying ongoing support and initial business training when needed. The resources and demand for MFIs services outstrips supply and this is where you make a difference. When you provide a loan you free up the vital financial resources of the MFI, which in turn allows them to provide another loan to another entrepreneur in need. Importantly, the support provided by the MFI does continue throughout the lifecycle of the loan that you and others have now supplied.
10. Do I get paid interest on the loans?
No, interest is not paid to you on the loans that you provide. Lenders do not receive interest on their loans because lendwithcare.org does not charge interest to our MFI partners. However, MFI’s do charge interest to their clients in order to cover operational costs. When we select our MFI partners, though, they have to meet various criteria, including charging a reasonable and fair interest rate relevant to the local context.
The interest free capital they receive from lendwithcare.org enables them to either lend to slightly poorer clients than they might otherwise, or to move into other more distant areas. For example, in Togo our MFI partner is able to operate in more isolated rural areas which are more expensive for them to run due to the logistics of receiving applications and collecting repayments. In some cases, such as the Philippines and Ecuador, our MFI partners have actually passed on the benefits of receiving interest free capital from lendwithcare.org to their clients through lower interest rates.
Our MFI partners also receive a small yearly grant from lendwithcare.org which covers the additional costs they have to incur in photographing their clients, writing up information for the lendwithcare.org system and generally administering repayments to lenders.
11. Does CARE International charge interest on loans?
CARE International does not charge interest on the loans made to entrepreneurs through lendwithcare.org.
12. Do currency exchange rates affect loan repayments?
Yes, currency exchange rates do affect the value of the loan repayments. Loans provided by you are ultimately provided to entrepreneurs in local currencies. Equally, repayments to you are translated back into GB pounds using the prevailing exchange rate. Exchange rates fluctuate over time so the monthly instalment you receive in GB Pounds will differ slightly to that forecast on the repayment schedule that is attached to each entrepreneur. Therefore, you will see fluctuations in repayment values; these will sometimes be less than the forecast repayment. If there is any exchange rate gain then this will be retained by CARE to help with our operational costs. See also FAQ’s 7 and 8.
13. I have credit in my account, how do I lend it?
Choose an entrepreneur from the entrepreneur section of the website, select the amount you wish to lend to them and click on the ‘Lend now’ button. This will add the loan to your basket. You are able to add multiple loans to your basket before ‘checking-out’.
14. I don’t have enough / any credit in my lendwithcare.org account.
If you do not have any or enough credit to complete the checkout of your loans, you will be automatically directed to PayPal or a debit/credit card page where you can credit your lendwithcare.org account with the required amount. Once done, the checkout process will continue to completion until you are successfully funding the entrepreneurs that you chose to support.
15. Can I make a loan without having a lendwithcare.org account?
No, you have to register to provide loans to entrepreneurs through lendwithcare.org. Setting up an account is straightforward and requires only basic information to get you started. Click here to register with lendwithcare.org and start lending today.
16. Do I need to provide any financial details when registering to use lendwithcare.org?
No. If you use PayPal to credit and debit funds from your lendwithcare.org account all financial details are managed securely and separately by PayPal. If you make a loan using a debit or credit card, your financial details are managed securely and separately by a company called Secure Hosting.
17. Do I have to give an additional donation to CARE International?
100% of the money you lend through lendwithcare.org goes to support the entrepreneur(s) you, the lender, choose. We do not take a compulsory administration charge and therefore some of the costs of running lendwithcare.org need to be covered by CARE International. To enable lendwithcare.org to operate effectively and expand into more countries there are points through the website where you can extend your support to help cover some of lendwithcare.org's operating costs through a donation. Making a donation is entirely voluntary and is not essential to provide loans to entrepreneurs.
18. Once the loan is repaid and the money belongs to me, am I free to make an absolute gift of this money to CARE International?
100% of the money you lend through lendwithcare.org goes to support the entrepreneur(s) you, the lender, choose. We do not take a compulsory administration charge and therefore some of the costs of running lendwithcare.org need to be covered by CARE International. To enable lendwithcare.org to operate effectively and expand into more countries there are points through the website where you can extend your support to help cover some of lendwithcare.org's operating costs through a donation. Making a donation is entirely voluntary and there is no objection to your receiving repayment of the loans and keeping the money yourself. Alternatively, you can, given that the money is entirely yours, make a separate donation to CARE which would be much appreciated.
19. Where do my donations go?
Donations you make through lendwithcare.org are used to help cover our operating costs, including supporting our microfinance partners to help even more people out of poverty. Since it is CARE International who cover any of lendwithcare.org's operating costs that are not covered by companies or foundations, your donation goes to CARE International.
20. Will I receive progress updates once the entrepreneur’s loan has been fully funded?
Each entrepreneur is encouraged to provide updates on their progress. We expect to provide at least one update per entrepreneur. However, due to the conditions and contexts within which our microfinance partners work it is not always practical or feasible to provide regular updates and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
21. Can I lend less than £15?
The minimum transaction is £15; other higher amounts are available through the drop down menu provided when making a loan. There is however an exception to the £15 minimum, this happens when a loan is almost complete and the remaining sum is less than £15. If this happens then select ‘Finish’ from the drop-down menu and your transaction value will equal the remainder of the loan.
22. Can I lend more than £15?
Yes, the drop-down menu offers increasing values up to the complete remaining loan value. To lend the entire remaining loan amount select “Entire Amount” from the drop down menu.
23. Will I get a receipt for my loan?
Shortly after you’ve made a loan to an entrepreneur you will receive a lendwithcare.org receipt email. If you have made multiple loans then these will all appear in the same receipt email.
When you use PayPal to credit your lendwithcare.org account you will receive a PayPal confirmation email directly from PayPal.
24. Why are loans not in nice round numbers?
Loans originate in the developing country of the entrepreneur. The loan amount agreed with the entrepreneur is in a currency that can be used locally. An exchange rate has to be applied to the loan amount before it appears on the lendwithcare.org website. Because of this the numbers are not rounded or whole.
25. Can I lend to the same entrepreneur more than once?
Yes, the same entrepreneur may take out a further loan once she/he has paid back the first one. However, this will appear as a separate loan on the lendwithcare.org website.
26. Why are there so few progress updates for my entrepreneur?
We expect to provide at least one update per entrepreneur and we encourage MFIs and entrepreneurs to provide updates to lendwithcare.org as often as they can. However, finding time from the days work in a developing country can be difficult for many and therefore updates unfortunately cannot be guaranteed.
27. Why is the first repayment amount on the schedule different to the subsequent payments?
To cover exchange rate fluctuations between when the loan is first placed on the site and the loan being fulfilled and sent abroad, a 10% buffer is added to the loan being sought by the entrepreneur. The loan amount on the lendwithcare.org website includes this 10% buffer.
The unused portion of the 10% buffer is repaid to you, the lender, as the first repayment on the repayment schedule. This repayment may have decreased against the amount scheduled due to fluctuations in the exchange rate. If there was a gain on the exchange rate this will be retained by CARE to help with our operational costs.
The remaining instalments on the repayment schedule are the repayments of the loan provided to the Entrepreneur.
By managing loans in this way, the entrepreneur receives their full loan request and is guarded by you and other lenders from currency exchange rate fluctuations that could damage the entrepreneur’s plans entirely and lead them into difficulty.
28. Can I contact or visit entrepreneur’s I am supporting?
Unfortunately it is not possible for us to facilitate contacting or visiting entrepreneurs that you are supporting. We do not have the resources to facilitate such contact nor do we believe it is fair on our entrepreneurs who lead very busy lives or our MFI partners who would have to facilitate such a visit.
29. I would like a loan from lendwithcare.org
lendwithcare.org does not make loans directly to individuals; we only work through Microfinance Institutions. Click here to see full details of the MFIs that we currently work with through lendwithcare.org.
30. What is group lending?
Group lending lets you make a bigger difference together. You can start a new group, or join an existing one. Once you are a member, you can attribute your loans to your chosen group. Your group can be public or private. You can set up a group in memory of a loved one, as your wedding list, a faith group, university, sports group or simply with like-minded lenders. Anyone can set up a group and invite others to join. If you set up your group as private, lenders can request membership of the group or the administrator can invite them to join, but all members must first be approved by the group administrator before joining. If you set up your group as public anyone can join without prior approval. For example if you were setting up a group of employees of a company you might want this to be a private group open only to invited members. However, if you were setting up a group in memory of a loved one you might want it to be open to anyone to join.
Members of a group continue lending on their own lendwithcare.org account but when they make their loan there will be an option to attribute it to a group they are a member of. Members can join more than one group but they can only choose to attribute a specific loan to one group.
If you are setting up a group you still need to have an individual or organisation lendwithcare.org account to make your loans.
31. Can I join more than one group?
Yes you can join as many groups as you like, but when you make a loan you must choose which group you want to attribute that loan to.
32. How do I create a new group?
Creating a lending group is quick and easy. Select ‘Groups’ on the bar near the top of the home page, then select the option on the right-hand side of the screen to ‘Start your Group today’ and follow the simple steps. Please note you must be registered with a lendwithcare.org account to start or join a group. To do this, select the option to ‘Register’ at the very top of the screen.
33. How do I find and join an existing group?
Go into ‘Groups’ and search using the group name or category in the search bar. Then click on ‘join group’ and you will become a member of that group immediately. If the group is private click on 'request to join group', you must then wait for the approval of the group administrator – you will be notified of this by email.
34. What does the group administrator do?
The administrator is responsible for the running of the group. They can create the group profile (with a picture and description), promote the group and if the group is private manage new member requests.
35. Can a group have more than one administrator?
Yes. An administrator can send a request to make another member an administrator. The member will receive an email informing them of the request, which they can then either accept or decline.
36. I am a school and I have raised money for lendwithcare.org, should I set up a group?
If you are only adding lump sums raised by the school there is no need to set up a group. You simply create a lendwithcare account and use the first name and last name fields as your school name. However, if you also want to invite parents to make individual loans which would be attributed to your school lending group then you will need to set up a group. If you have any problems you can email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 020 7091 6073 (you will usually get a faster response if you email us and include a telephone number if you would like us to call you back).
37. I am a business and I am lending through lendwithcare.org, should I set up as a group?
If you are only adding lump sums from your business there is no need to set up a group. You simply create a lendwithcare account and use the first name and last name fields as your business name. However, if you also want to invite staff or customers to make individual loans which would be attributed to your business lending group then you will need to set up a group. If you have any problems you can email email@example.com or call 020 7091 6073 (you will usually get a faster response if you email us and include a telephone number if you would like us to call you back).
38. Can I stop people joining my group if I don’t know them?
If the group is private the administrator can deny a person entry to the group at any time. You must give a reason when you reject a member request, but the person who made the request will not be informed of this. Once an administrator rejects a member, they cannot join again. An administrator can only remove another administrator by sending an email to Nancy at firstname.lastname@example.org
39. Is my group public or private? What is the difference?
On the groups page it shows whether your group is public or private. If your group is public, anybody visiting lendwithcare.org will be able to view your group, join and start lending immediately. If your group is private you will be able to manage who joins your group but lenders will have to wait for the approval of the administrator before they can start lending for the group.
40. How many people can join a group?
The more the merrier! There are no limits on the number of members a group can have. We do not show the amount lent by each individual, only the total.
41. Can I lend as an individual and as part of a group?

44. How do I attribute my loans to a group?
When you make a loan you will be given the option to attribute it to one of your groups on the 'check out' summary page just before you make payment. All loans and donations that are in your 'basket' are attributed to whichever group you choose. If you wanted to make two loans and attribute them to two different groups you would need to go through the 'check out' process twice.
45. Can I attribute my loans to more than one group?
You can attribute different loans to different groups but you can only attribute a specific loan to one group and we are not able to change the group it has been attributed to once the transaction is complete.
46. How do I delete my group?
Please send an email to Nancy at firstname.lastname@example.org with your contact details, ideally including a telephone number.
47. Can I attribute previous loans to my group?

CARE International does not profit from the loans transacted on lendwithcare.org. All transactional fees are paid for from CARE’s funds, which are raised through generous donations. PayPal does not charge you, the lender, for crediting your lendwithcare.org account or for making withdrawals from it.

81. What is a Lendwithcare Angel?
A "Lendwithcare Angel" is someone who is helping us extend lendwithcare.org to change the lives of more families living in poverty around the world by making a monthly donation to help cover lendwithcare.org's operating costs.
100% of the loan made by lendwithcare.org lenders goes to their chosen entrepreneur meaning that we need to cover our operating costs through voluntary donations. We keep our costs to a minimum, but to ensure we are having the greatest impact on poverty we need to promote lendwithcare.org to a wider audience and we need to monitor the performance of our Microfinance Institution partners, and of course there are costs involved in transferring money overseas and back to our lenders.
Anyone can become a Lendwithcare Angel. Either by following this link or by clicking on the halo on any lender's profile.
82. Is Lendwithcare a crowdfunding website and how does it differ?
Yes, Lendwithcare is a crowdfunding website, there are many different models of crowdfunding from those who offer a share of equity to those who offer some kind of reward. Lendwithcare is neither of these models, we do not charge any interest to our microfinance institution partners and we do not pay any interest back to those who Lend. Lenders are lending out of a deshire to improve the lives of their fellow human beings and the only reward is knowing that they are helping to change lives for the better.
