Luis Ortega mostly works as a builder. However, in order to supplement the household's income he also raises and sells chickens as a part-time activity. His wife sells clothing from a catalogue and they live in the small town of Malacatos in southern Ecuador. Don Luis has a three year old daughter. He built a barn on his parents' land where the chickens are kept. He spends around one hour in the morning and one in the afternoon feeding the birds and cleaning the area where they are housed. Currently he has around 180 chickens. He sells them in the small town of Vilcabamba in markets and shops as well as to specific customers he knows. He makes around $270 per month on average from chicken farming. Don Luis requested a loan to buy seven sacks of maize feed for $18 per sack, five sacks of specialist feed for $32 per sack and the remainder is for buying materials to repair the barn roof.
