Carlos Abad is married with one daughter who is two years old. His wife works with her mother preparing and selling traditional Ecuadorian food called ‘tamales’ and ‘humitas’ which are made from maize. About three years ago Don Carlos established a business raising chickens. He has built up the numbers he raises and now on average sells 25 birds a month for around $12 each. He sells the birds alive to restaurants and neighbours, and delivers eggs to local shops. He estimates that he earns a monthly profit of around $200. He is a part-time chicken farmer and also works as a labourer. Don Carlos requested a loan to buy more chicks, feed in bulk and pay for materials and labourto help him enclose his smallholding and repairing the barn where the birds are housed.
