Machawi Group needed £1796.67 for their business.
The Machawi group is based in the district of Lilongwe and is made up of 14 women, the majority of who are married. Between them they have 42 children who rely on them, and the majority of these children attend school. The women run different small businesses including restaurants and stalls selling fish, snacks, groceries, cereals, clothes and livestock. Each lady will use their share of the loan to buy more stock for their stalls/restaurants so that they can expand their businesses. They enjoy being financially independent and hope to increase their profits to continue sending their children to school.
Matilda is one of the members of the group and is 44 years old. She is married and cares for her 5 children and 1 orphan. Matilda sells mobile phones as her business and intends to purchase 7 mobile phones with her share of the group loan. The profits from her business will enable her to pay for food and school fees for her children and the orphan she cares for. Matilda initially started the business 1 year ago to earn a living for her family, and now enjoys the financial independence it gives her. Her future goal is to increase the profits she makes by expanding her business, and to build a spacious house for her family. The group will repay their loan over 4 months.
