The Mwaiwathu group consists of 6 women between the ages of 32 and 45 years old. They all live in the Nyimba district of Zambia and have children who attend school. These women also look after orphans who go to school. The women of the Mwaiwathu group run small scale businesses like market and grocery stalls. They started their businesses to provide daily needs for families and give their children a better life through an education. They all want to expand their businesses so that they will have a larger household income to spend on their expenses.
Group member Daina Tembo is 32 years old and is a single mother of one child who is in school. She runs a grocery stall selling cooking oil, sugar, lotions, cereals, soft drinks and many other products. Daina will use her share of the loan to buy more cereals, lotions and soft drinks to restock her grocery stall. She hopes that profit from expanding her business will allow her to afford a nicer home for her family. Her hopes for the family are to provide them a better accommodation. As a woman she is self-reliant and able to stand on her own as a result of her business. The group will repay their loan over 6 months.
