Nixon Luzuriaga is a smallholder farmer. He is 24 and works alongside his mother raising beef cattle. He also works as a geologist. His mother owns approximately ten hectares of pasture near the small town of Palanda in southern Ecuador. Don Nixon has already received and repaid several short-term loans to buy livestock and expand his business. At present he has 30 head of cattle. On average he sells around 15 each year. Don Nixon transports the animals to the border town of Huaquillas and sells each one for around $800. He reckons that he earns a monthly profit of around $400. Don Nixon requested a loan to pay five labourers to help him clean and enclose his pasture, purchase ten sacks of specialist feed and also buy more young cattle to raise.
