Luz Rojas is a strong and determined woman. She is 41 and separated from her husband around 20 years ago. Her son, who is 23, works in a car wash and as a professional driver at the weekends. Her daughter, who is 20, works at a snack bar at a local school and also sells cosmetics by catalogue. They both help with covering the household’s expenses. Doña Luz runs a small kiosk from where she sells confectionery and fruit from 11.30 am to 1 pm each day as she lives next to a school in the small town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. Doña Luz also raises free-range chickens. She sells them alive or slaughtered at her home or at the open market fairs. She has been raising chickens for the last 18 years or so. Her business has increased over the years and she now has around 180 birds in total. She makes a profit of around $500 per month from the chickens. Doña Luz requested a loan to buy chicks and feed in bulk. However, a part of the loan will be used to repair the whole roof at home as it has become damaged.
