Jorge Iñiguez is from near the small town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. He is a qualified agronomist and also works as a smallholder farmer. He inherited four hectares of land from his parents. He grows coffee, maize, and has a range of fruit trees. He has also started fish farming and has a pool full of tilapia. Moreover, he raises animals including pigs, ducks and he also has around 40 free-range chickens. He sells his harvest and animals in Cariamanga. On average he sells one pig and 10 chickens every month. Don Jorge learned farming from his parents and then went on to study agriculture at university. He started farming independently with a gift of two pigs and maize seeds from his parents. He has been able to buy a little more land and his farming supported his university education. Currently, he rears eight pigs. Don Jorge requested a loan to buy 900 kilograms of ground maize for his animals, specialist feed as well as pay labourers to help him plough and prepare the land ready for sowing.
