Estelita needed £2762.50 for her business.
Estelita Alforque is 62 years old with three adult children. She lives with her child, daughter in law and two grandchildren in the village of Tunghaan in the town of Minglanilla in Cebu province. Estelita has been supporting her children by herself since they were kids. She started by investing in a funeral service and earning a monthly income from it. When she had enough money to start her own, she open her own funeral business and named it “Telly’s funeral service”. It has been running for eight years now. Before, Estelita managed the business everyday but now she has hired her son to manage the business. She also hires one licensed embalmer, 3 drivers, 1 secretary and 2 helpers. Her funeral packages starts from a simple set-up which cost about 15,000 pesos (about £213) all the way to 100,000 pesos (about £1,423) for those who prefer a grander service. Her services include caskets, flowers, set-up for viewing arrangements, food, music and transportation. She always asks for a down payment but sometimes due to lack of funds from the deceased’s family she delivers the services first and asks for payment after the burial. In a month she earns about $4,000. Estelita has been a loyal member of Lendwithcare’s microfinance partner Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative for about thirteen years and has accessed loans that helped her business grow to what it is now. This year she was awarded one of the outstanding entrepreneurs of the year. She requested this larger loan to buy a 50 square metre plot of land for 300,000 pesos. She plans to build rooms to rent on that land in the future. While Estelita stays at home, she also manages a small ‘sari-sari’ general store business to earn extra income. She promises to repay her loan over 12 months.
