This loan is for a group called the Tionge women’s group, which has 18 members, who range in age from 25 to 68. The group is based in Kafue district of Eastern Zambia. All of the women are married and have children who are in school. They started their businesses for different reasons but mostly to reduce poverty levels within their families and to be financially independent. The group has already received and repaid two short-term loans. One of the members of the group is called Ireen Mukoga. She is married and has four children who are all in school. She runs a market stall selling mealie meal. Mealie meal is made from maize corn and is used to make nsima the staple food for Zambia. She buys the maize from villages closr to her community and takes this to the millers to have it processed. She has had this business for the past eight years and she is happy with the profits that she so far has been able to generate. Ireen will use her part of the loan to buy more maize and pay the millers.
