Julia Alulima is a smallholder farmer who lives in the outskirts of the city of Loja in southern Ecuador. She grows a range of vegetables including cabbages, lettuces, radishes, spinach and Swiss chard. She learned to farm from her parents and once she married and bought a small plot of land she began farming independently. Doña Julia sells the vegetables at the open market fairs. Since harvesting is quite labour-intensive and she is now 70 years old, she hires two laboures to help her. Her son helps to transport the harvest and for the purchase and delivery of items such as compost. Doña Julia has five adult children who are all independent. One of her sons works as a repair technician but also helps her on the smallholding. Doña Julia feels very proud to have been able to build herown house and to cover the household expenses, as well as to buy a vehicle to transport the produce. She estimates her monthly profit is around $230. Doña Julia requested a loan to rent machinery and pay two labourers to help her plough her land. The remaining funds will be used to purchase compost in bulk, seeds and other inputs.
