Laura esperanza needed £956.52 for her business.
Laura Esperanza Gordillo is a small-scale farmer who lives in near the small town of Catamayo. Doña Laura grows short-cycle crops such as maize and beans, in an area known as La Era which belongs to the parish of El Tambo. The harvest is sold in Catamayo at the open market fairs. Doña Laura started farming some 25 years ago. She is married to Miguel Eduardo Lopez Arevalo, who works taking care of a farm near the capital city of Quito, far to the north. He sends regular remittances. He decided to emigrate in order to improve his family’s economic situation. Doña Laura has ten children, seven of whom are already adults and independent. The other three still live with her and are attending school but also help her with the farming. She feels proud as she has been able to build her own house and help cover the household’s expenses. On average, she estimates a monthly profit is around $600 per month. Doña Laura requested a loan to buy thirty-five sacks of fertiliser. Each one weights 50 kilograms and costs $32.
