Cristhian Paucar is married with an infant son. Don Cristhian is 25 and a smallholder farmer from near the town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. His wife and son live in the city of Loja.  He started raising chickens around one year ago. At present he has around 200 birds of which some 40 are ready for sale. He sells them slaughtered in butchers and restaurants in Cariamanga. In addition he also raises pigs. He buys piglets, fattens them over several months before selling them on. At present he has four pigs which will be ready for sale in about three months. As soon as he could, Don Cristhian invested in the construction of pig sheds and barns for the chickens. He feels pleased as he has managed to obtain a good group of regular clients who like the quality of the meat he sells. On average he produces and sells around 100 chickens per month which yields a profit of around $300. He sells on average one pig each month for $200. Don Cristhian requested a loan to buy feed, ten 10 piglets as well as 1000 bricks, cement, and to pay the labour of a builder to build new pig pens so he can raise more animals.
