Edulfa Sánchez is married with seven children. Her three daughters are themselves married and live separately while her four sons are still in school and live at home. Her husband pans for gold in local rivers. Doña Edulfa has a business roasting and grinding coffee which she then sells to retailers. She buys all the coffee beans from local smallholder coffee farmers. She sells her coffee in the nearby towns of Malacatos, Vilcabamba y San Pedro de Vilcabamba. Lately, she has been exploring new markets and taking her coffee to be sold in the much larger city of Cuenca around four hours by road to the north. When they have free time, her sons also help her to grind and pack the coffee. In addition, Doña Edulfa raises chickens on land next to her home. She actually started doing this before processing coffee which she began around five years ago. At present she has around 150 birds. She can earn around $440 profit from both activities on average each month. Doña Edulfa requested a loan to buy new machinery for roasting and grinding her coffee. A part of the loan will be used to buy sacks of maize and specialist feed for the chickens.
