For more than 40 years Catalina Briceño has been supporting herself and her family through raising chickens. Her parents were smallholder farmers as well. She is married with nine adult children. Her husband, Don Leonardo Romero, cultivates maize, part of which is used for animal feed as well. At present Catalina has around 180 chickens which are raised to be sold for their meat after around four months. She sells them plucked at the open market in the small town of Malacatos. In addition they have around five pigs at present. These are sold alive. The maize is sold by her husband in the provincial capital of Loja. Catalina Pancha requested a loan to purchase another 180 chicks, five pigs, maize seed and sacks of specialist animal feed for both the pigs and chickens. She and her husband want to double the numbers of chickens and pigs they raise.
