Mrs. Sokly is 32 years old and has been farming mangos for over 10 years. She currently grows mango trees on five hectares of land. By growing mangos on this land she can grow about 300 trees, which in five years’ time will have mango fruits ready to sell. She will sell her mango fruits directly to her local trader, who generally visits the farm to check the quality and then negotiate on the price of her fruit. She can pick the mangos twice a year, which gives her a seasonal source of income for her family. In order to get a good working capital for her mango farm she has requested to borrow this 36 month loan in order to purchase a pipe to make an irrigation system.
In addition to farming mangos, Sokhly and her husband have been running a general store for over two years. They sell at their local market and can earn $50 a day from the business. They need to buy new stock every week, using their car to pick up the stock. Another part of the loan will also be used to purchase new stock to sell from their store, such as soft drinks, pure drop water, sugar, biscuits and other ingredients.
