Mariana Sarango is a smallholder farmer from near the small town of Cariamanga in southern Ecuador. She requested a loan to buy 100 chicks and 15 bags of specialist feed, but also to pay three labourers to help her harvest two hectares of maize and then transport the crop to market. Doña Mariana is married and her husband is a carpenter with a workshop next to their home. They have three daughters, the eldest one is married and lives separately. Doña Mariana started farming many years ago on land given to her by her parents and parents-in-law. She started with just one-third of an hectare of maize and beans and one pig. The work is hard and the biggest challenge is the fact that maize and animals are brought across the border from Peru driving down prices. Doña Mariana sells her harvest in the town of Cariamanga - usually she receives $1,500 for her maize harvest, $200 for 15 chickens and $240 for one pig. Over the years she as bought her own land and built a home and now provides employment to labourers from time to time.
