Loan description:
Mrs Rom is 32 and has three children. One is a toddler, the other two are at school. She and her husband already have three hectares of land on which they grow naturally irrigated, seasonal rice. Their present yield is consistently around four tons per hectare, and is supplemented by the rental of six more hectares from local villagers. The market easily supports this level of production. However, it is an expensive activity, costing $150 a hectare, and provides no capital benefit. To reduce rental costs, improve their overall profitability and create a long term asset, they wish to buy an extra hectare of naturally irrigated paddy. They expect to produce the same four tons per acre from this land, and be able to repay the loan from profits over 36 months.
