Vicente Chamba is 68 and married. He lives with his wife and youngest daughter, who is a single mother, near the small town of Catamayo. Don Vicente has seven children altogether, but the elder six are married and live separately. Don Vicente raises chickens and goats. At the beginning, he only had 50 chickens and two goats; two troughs and two drinking troughs. However, over time he has been able to increase numbers and infrastructure as he now has barns as well. He sells hens and chickens at the street markets in Catamayo and when there is any surplus left, he goes to the provincial capital of Loja to sell the products. He usually has an income of $952 or so from selling chickens at a price of $18 each and goats at $50, leaving him an average profit of around $400 per month. Don Vicente requested a loan in order to purchase maize and specialist feed in bulk for the animals.
