Lester Gonzaga is 25 and lives just outside the small town of Catamayo in southern Ecuador. Don Lester grows short cycle crops such as maize, tomatoes and beans but also cultivates passion fruit or maracuya. He used to help his mother with farming and after completing secondary school started farming himself on land provided to him by his mother. He started growing maracuya on one tarea of land, about 600 square metres. He has extended production and currently has around one hectare of land planted. The short cycle crops produce a more steady stream of income. He supports his mother and siblings with the income he earns. Don Lester requested a loan in order to pay two agricultural labourers he employs to help him on a temporary basis, to buy agricultural supplies, to fumigate some crops and to buy some tools that he needs.
