Sreymao Phan is a farmer from Bovel District in Battambang province in north-western Cambodia. For the last five years or so she has been cultivating rice and cassava. She usually harvests around two tonnes of rice. She has a separate larger area of land measuring around four hectares where she grows cassava. She can usually harvest around 80 tonnes of cassava root. She has been renting an additional three hectares to increase the area she has under cultivation. She pays a total of $750 per year to rent the land. Sreymao requested a loan in order to pay for the costs of ploughing her land. The machinery costs $80 per hectare. She also intends to cover the cost of the annual rent, and pay 10 labourers to help with the harvesting and planting. Each labourer earns $5 per day. However, the vast majority of the loan it to buy fertiliser, crop protection products and seeds.
