Loan description:
Sylvie Kakanakou is 41 years old and married with five children. She lives in the capital of Benin, Cotonou. She has a general store and although she sells a variety of household food items, her main focus is the wholesale sale of bags of maize and 'Sikalite' which is used in house construction. Sikalite is a powdered waterproofing admixture which blocks the capillaries and pores in Portland cement/sand mortars preventing the movement of moisture. It is used to waterproof Portland cement/sand renders and mortars. She has been running this business for about 20 years. Sylvie's business is located in the capital's large international market called Dantokpa. She employs two full time staff mainly for the sale of Sikalite. She is a longstanding client of the microfinance institution ACFB and has been receiving and repaying loans for several years. Her latest application is for 500,000 West African francs which will be used primarily to buy new stock. Apart from the usual household costs her main expenditure is her children's education, particularly school fees.
