Loan description:

Mrs Akouavi Kindoho is 55 and married with 10 children. One of her children is an apprentice stonemason, one an apprentice carpenter and one is at high school. The other seven help her in her business. For the last 40 years, Akouavi has run a very busy restaurant, where she sells only akassa (a sort of cornmeal porridge) and fried fish in a carefully-prepared tomato sauce. She also works in the fields to grow tomatoes so that she can avoid having to buy them at the market and being subject to price increases. In fact, tomato plants are very productive, with a yield of around three or four kilograms per plant, and the production technique is quite simple. The plants are grown in fertile, well-drained soil that has ideally been improved with manure, and is then enriched prior to planting with special tomato fertiliser that is not too rich in nitrogen. In contrast to her competitors, Akouavi prefers to sell in the evening to build up a good clientele, allowing her to attend to her tomato plants in the morning. She stocks up on fish on the beach at Cotonou, maize at the market in Dantokpa and tomatoes from her field. She has already received several loans from the microfinance institution ACFB and this new loan for 450,000 West African francs will help her to manage her business better. The profit generated will help her to achieve her dream of having a large general store in her local area, and to help her husband meet their household running costs.

KINDOHO Akouavi.
