Loan description:

Fried bananas, locally known as “banana cues”, are one of the most popular snacks in the Philippines. Bananas are coated in brown sugar and fried in oil in a large pan. They are a relatively cheap food for most Filipinos costing just ten pesos per stick. Merlinda Aredidon is 40 years old and married with two children both of whom attend a local primary school in the town of Tuburan in the province of Cebu. Merlinda has for the past three years operated a small stall that sells fried bananas. Each morning she buys a few kilograms of bananas in the public market and makes all the necessary ingredients and preparations for the rest of the day. In the afternoon, she cooks and sells fried bananas. Merinda has been an active member of the microfinance organisation First Consolidated for the last four years. She requested a small loan, repayable over six months, in order to buy a new stove.
