Philippines
Loan description:
'Sari-sari' or small general convenience stores are a common sight in Philippine neighbourhoods. They stock a wide range of basic foods and common household goods, are open long hours and are conveniently located. Esterlita Maquilan is 45 years old and married with one child. The family’s primary source of income is her small sari-sari store located in Pajo Tabuelan, Cebu. Her husband and child occasionally help her in buying a few stocks of merchandise in the town centre. She has been running the store for the past two years and among other things stocks shampoo, soap, tissue paper, detergents, condiments and canned foods. She has sought a small short term loan from the microfinance institution First Consolidated in order to purchase additional stocks. She intends to repay the loan over three months.
