Loan description:
Saret Bou is 48 years old and married with three children. The eldest is a daughter who is 23 years old and married and lives separately in her own household. The others are sons aged 20, 17 and 14. They are all still in full time education. Saret’s family live in Doun Teav village, Pam Ek commune, Ek Phnom district, Battambang province. Saret has been a member of the Ek Phnom Credit Union since 2004. Saret and his wife are farmers and also, for the past six years, make 'Sambork Nam'. Saret sells Sambork Nam in bulk to Pam Ek market and also delivers directly to the houses of customers using his own motorbike. Sambok Nem is a type of Cambodian food made from rice flour and best resembles a spring rolls (the photograph shows Saret drying Sambok Nem). It is usually served as a snack and even as a first course on ceremonial occasions. Saret and his wife also own and farm four hectares of rice paddy located around six kilometres from their home. They receive a yield of approximately two tonnes of rice per hectare. Usually he delivers the rice harvest to a local rice mill. In order to ensure a good harvest, Saret needs to prepare the land well. He has therefore sought a loan, repayable over 12 months, in order to hire an excavator to level his land (which is uneven and does not hold water well) and thereafter hire a tractor to plough the same land ready for planting.
