Melbina Tuico is a 39 year old wife and mother of four children who are aged 15, 12, 11 and 3. Her eldest child is currently studying at high school while two of her other children are at elementary school. Melbina is married to Edilberto, who is 40 years old and a market vendor. Melbina runs a small restaurant in her village which is in the town of Daanbantayan in Cebu province. She is engaged in selling various kinds of meals and dishes in small volumes. She prepares different meals everyday and usually manages to cook more than five dishes. Aside from these dishes, she also sells sodas, snacks and bread as additional offerings to her valued customers. People can stay at her restaurant to comfortably eat their food. She has one refrigerator where she stores all her sodas, stocks of meat and vegetables as well as some leftovers. She even has set up a small television in order to entertain her visiting customers. Melbina has run this restaurant for 15 years now. She is a member of the microfinance organisation, First Consolidated Cooperative, where she has already completed two past loans. She has acquired a new loan worth $263 (10,000 Philippine pesos) to increase the number of dishes she can prepare by buying more ingredients in bulk. She will save her income to support the studies of her children. The loan is for twelve months.
