Loan description:
Socheat Tith is 30 years old and grows maize on six hectares of land. The yield from his maize farming provides him with around six tonnes per hectare. He is able to grow maize on his land twice a year since it only takes a period three months to cultivate before it is ready to be harvested and sold. Merchants buy directly from his farm and negotiate the price once the maize has been harvested. To create a sustainable income from his maize farming, Socheat has decided to ask for a twelve month loan in order to cover some of his farming costs and purchase essential agricultural inputs. Socheat will use the loan to buy good quality maize seeds, weed killer and insecticide. He will also use a part of the loan to cover the cost of ploughing and harvesting his land. He generally hires around 20 villagers to assist him with harvesting and ploughing and he pays them around $5 a day for this labor.
