Ecuador
Loan description:
María Ruilova is 42 and married with three children aged 19,18 and 15 respectively. All three attend college in the evenings (this is quite common in Ecuador, particularly for students that work during the day). Doña Maria sells 'empanadas' (these are fried pastries filled with cheese usually served with coffee and a popular snack) in the town of Catamayo. Doña Maria came to Catamayo about 11 years ago from Ecuador's largest city of Guayaquil on the coast. She decided to move because Guayaquil has become too large and industrialised with increasing levels of crime. For a long time Doña Maria sold empanadas as an itinerant trader. Her business has developed well and she decided to rent premises where she can set up a small cafe. She can offer a greater range of prepared foods also from a cafe. She requested the loan to help her set up the cafe - specifically to pay the rent and deposit for the premises and buy the equipment she needs to start. She intends to repay the loan over 15 months.
