Pha Sorn is 51 years old and married to Mr. Pin Poeurn, who is shown in the photograph. Together they produce both wet and dry season rice on around two hectares. Pha and Pin generally produce around three tonnes of rice per hectare and they sell this to a local merchant after their have negotiated and agreed a price. To enable them to increase yield they have applied for a twelve month loan in order to cover the cost of purchasing fertiliser, good quality rice seeds, insecticide, weed killer and to cover the cost of ploughing their land (one hectare costs around $30). They generally keep half of their income from their farming to cover their next farming and half on household expenses, including their children’s schooling.
