Loan description:
Balvina Troya requested a loan in order to buy chicks - day old chicks generally cost $1 while week old chicks cost double. She intends to repay the loan over six months. Balvina now lives near the town of Catamayo, although she is originally from the district of Cariamanga. Dona Blavina is married with four children, only the youngest two live at home and attend secondary school though. The elder two are already married and live separately. Her husband is a bricklayer and building labourer. Before she married Balvina worked as a domestic maid in the town of Cariamanga. After marrying though she and her husband decided to migrate to the larger town of Catamayo in search of better economic opportunities. Initially they struggled though because employment opportunities were scarce and they could not afford for their elder two children to complete their secondary education. They saved what money they earned to buy a small plot of land where they built their own home and at least saved on paying rent. Balvina decided to start her own small business raising and selling chickens for their meat. At the beginning she only had a small number but gradually over time as she has earmed a profit she has reinvested and raised more and more. She sells to restaurants, butchers and even directly to individual customers at the weekly farmers markets.
