Ecuador
Loan description:
Carmen Morocho is 45 and married with three daughters, all of whom are now over the age of 18. She earns a living from raising and selling eggs and chicken meat. She has a small number of guinea pigs as well (these are a popular food in much of the Andean region, particularly in Ecuador and Peru). She married quite young and her husband works in the military. He has overcome alcohol abuse problems. They own their own home and Doña Carmen has even bought land in her own name where she grows vegetables. She requested a loan in order to buy more chicks and feed (several large bags of maize as well as specialist feed) for the birds, as it can take several months for them to grow to be ready to either be sold and particularly to produce eggs. The birds are free range and the meat and eggs they produce fetch a higher price. She intends to repay the loan over 12 months.
