Ecuador
Loan description:
Ramon Cueva is a farmer. He is 69 and has nine adult children all of whom live separately with their own families. For some twenty years Ramón worked in the coastal region as a fisherman. He received a good wage as the coastal region generally offers higher wages and more employment opportunities than the mountainous sierra region. This permitted him to provide all of his children with a good education. However, his wife's health suffered in the humid coast and they decided to return to live near Catamayo. Don Ramon grows peppers, beans and maize which he sells at the weekly farmer's markets in town. His wife's health has now improved. Ramon rents the land he farms although he hopes one day to buy his own land which would enable him to earn more. Don Ramon requested a loan in order to buy quality seeds, fertiliser and pay for labour he will need to contract to help him plough and prepare the land ready for the next sowing.
