Samuel Valdez is 45 years old and single. He lives together with his 75 year old mother, Lolita, in Nueva Ecija province. For the past 15 years, Samuel has been growing rice on a hectare of land. He has several part-time workers who assist him. Samuel has already completed 8 past loan cycles with the microfinance organisation Alalay sa Kaunlaran and is requesting a new loan of $656 (25,000 Philippine pesos) to purchase better varieties of rice (‘palay’) and has promised to repay this over a five month period. He hopes to increase his production to buy medication for his mother.
