Vicente Victoriano Cuenca González is a farmer from near the town of Malacatos in southern Ecuador. He is 50 and single. Don Vicente farms his own land growing mainly beans and maize. He has been farming since he was 12 years old, initially helping on the family farm. It has provided him with a good living although he is largely dependent upon a favourable climate for good results and the prices he is paid by intermediaries at harvest. He requested a loan in order to buy seeds, fertiliser and pay for labour which he needs to hire to help him plough and prepare the land ready for the next sowing. The loan is repayable over 12 months.
