Cambodia
Loan description:
Savet Rik is 44 years old and has five children, who are aged between 21 and 6 years. Only his three younger children are still at school. Savet and his family live in a village in Sangke district, which is in Battambang province. Savet farms one hectare of rice paddy and produces around two tonnes which he sells to a local merchant. After he has harvested his crops he works for other villagers near the Cambodian-Thai border picking maize and chopping cassava. He can earn around $5 a day doing this work and it provides him with another source of income for his household, which is especially vital for sending his children to school. To expand his farming business he has decided to take out an eighteen month loan in order to purchase another plot of farming land (around one hectare) to produce more rice for sale on. If he can farm two hectares of rice paddy instead of just one, Savet will be able to produce rice twice a year and this will significantly increase his income. He will also start raising chickens from his home to provide another source of income for his family.
