Original loan requested: £355.50
Mario Mahinay certainly does not consider dressmaking to be women’s work. Mario is 41 years old and a husband and father of two children. He owns a small tailoring and dressmaking shop in Tuburan, Cebu. He himself designs and sews most of what he sells. For the past 8 years, he has managed the business and has even taken on two of his neighbours as full time employees. They help with the tailoring. Whenever there are special occasions or festivities in his local community, Mario’s expertise in men’s formal attire as well as gowns has made his business very popular. Indeed, orders are increasing and Mario plans to invest more in increasing the scale of production. The loan he hopes to receive will be used to purchase an additional sewing machine. He believes that when production increases, the returns to his business will also increase. When this happens, a big portion of his earnings will be saved for his children’s college education. As Mario’s tailoring business continues to become successful, he plans to open another tailoring/dressmaking shop in the town centre.
Entrepreneur updates
Super Mario!
Mario Mahinay received a short term loan of 20,000 Philippine pesos repayable over four months. He is about to finish repaying the loan. He used the funds to buy a sewing machine, cloth and other supplies for his tailoring business and has had no problems in making repayments. He has a joint business with his wife: he provides tailoring services and next door his wife is in charge of hiring out wedding gowns and other types of formal dresses used for special occasions. He employs two apprentices to help with the tailoring, one of whom is a nephew. He does make individual items as well as school uniforms. Coincidentally, he even made the uniforms for staff of the microfinance organisation First Consolidated Along Tanon Seaboard (FCCT) who provided him with the loan. He has a savings account with FCCT as well, but tends to only to withdraw when he needs small amounts of money. For larger investments he applies for a loan from FCCT. He has become quite well known and clients come from neighbouring towns to hire gowns. He hopes that when his daughter graduates she can assist him in opening and managing a second tailoring and gown hire shop in another town.
