Loan description:
José Manuel Puchaicela Armijos is a farmer. He is 66 and married with two children both of whom are now adults. Don José lives in the rural community of San Bernavé near the town of Catamayo. Mainly he farms maize, beans, cassava, peppers, and cucumbers. He owns his own house and land. His income is irregular and depends very much on the harvest. Don José admits that in the absence of alternatives he used to borrow cash from moneylenders and had to pay high rates of interest. However, he now uses the microfinance organisation Fundacion FACES instead when he requires loans. His most recent request for $3000 is to purchase fertiliser and some more land to farm. Don José intends to repay the loan over 18 months. As a farmer with more land he provides employment to agricultural day labourers when it is time to plough and harvest.
