Maria Macas is 56 and married with eight children. All but one are now adults and live separately with their own homes. The youngest is 13 and studies at secondary school. Doña Maria has a business selling pork and chicken in the parish of San Pedro de la Bendita. She is helped by one of her daughters. Doña María's husband is a small-scale farmer. She requested a loan in order to buy more meat in bulk during the post festive season when sales of both pork and chicken peak. Doña Maria and her husband are saving to buy a plot of land where they can construct their home. She intends to repay the loan over 15 months.
