María Esperanza Chamba González is 38 and has five children. She lives with her partner in the district of 'Tierras Coloradas' on the western outskirts of the city of Loja. Doña María sells women's cosmetics and creams as an itinerant trader. Additionally, Doña María runs a small shop which she has set up inside her own home. However, she considers selling the beauty products to be more profitable because the margin she can earn on the shop items is not much. Through their hard work, Doña María and her partner, who is a builder, have bought a basic house which they are in the process of re-modeling and improving. She requested a loan in order to buy more cosmetics in bulk to sell - the period leading up to Christmas is usually the busiest time of the year for her. She intends to repay the loan over nine months. She hopes she has good sales as she wants to buy presents for all her children as well.
