Loan description:
Madeleine Biokou is 47 and has six children, the eldest is 30 and the youngest 6. Her younger three children are still in school. Madame Madeleine did not attend school herself. She has been a reliable client of the microfinance organisation ACFB for the past four years and has during this time received and repaid eight short-term loans. For the past 30 years Madame Madeleine has made a living from producing and then selling palm oil. She buys the palm nuts from the local market at Adja Ouèrè as well as directly from small scale farmers in the area around her village. Red palm oil is used extensively for cooking in West Africa. When she is particularly busy Madame Madeleine employs up to eight staff on a temporary basis. She sells to wholesalers and retailers in Pobè. She requested a loan of 700,000 West African francs, repayable over 12 months, in order to buy palm nuts in bulk as well as cassava which she will peel, grind and heat to make 'gari' which is a local staple food.
