Kunthea

Loan description:

Kunthea Raing is 29 years old and married with one daughter who is 8 years old and now studying at the local government school. Kunthea and her family live in Boskhnor village, which is in Banon district, Battambang province. Kunthea and her husband, Sarom (shown in the photographs), have been farming for the past five years and currently farm three hectares of rice paddy. The yield from their farming gives them approximately two tonnes per hectare. They keep one tonne of this rice for their own personal consumption and sell the remainder to a local trader. Aside from farming rice, they also rent another piece of land to grow maize and peanuts on. This piece of rented land is around three hectares. On this land they are able to grow maize twice a year and the yield is around four tonnes per hectare. They don’t need to deliver their maize to sell at the market as most buyers visit their farm to negotiate the price with them. Now they plant peanuts on a piece of land that is about one hectare in size. Since their working capital is currently limited, Kunthea and her husband have applied for a microloan in order to cover some of their farming costs such as pay for renting their land, buy good quality seeds of maize, buy insecticide, weed killer and to cover other associated costs. They aim to repay this loan over a period of 16 months (the photographs show Kunthea's husband picking the peanuts they have planted on one hectare).
