Loan description:
Chet Noeurm is 33 years old and married with five children. His eldest child is 13 and his youngest is 6 months old. His three elder children are currently studying at the local government school. Chet and his family live in Andoung Neang village, which is in Banon district, Battambang province. Chet and his wife, Rat (who is in the photograph), currently farm two hectares of land on which they grow maize. They have been engaged in maize farming for the past four years. Their land provides them with 3.5 to 4 tonnes of maize per hectare. They grow maize twice a year and they sell it to a buyer who visits their farm and then negotiates a price. The whole process of growing and picking the maize takes about four months. Since their working capital is quite limited, Chet has applied for a loan in order to buy seeds, insecticide and weed killer. They promise to repay this loan over nine months.
