Sergio Torres is a farmer from near Catamayo in southern Ecuador. He is 59 years old and married with eight children. Don Sergio grows maize, beans, peppers and tomatoes mainly. He sells the crops himself directly at the 'ferias libres' or days when the markets and surrounding areas are open for anyone to sell to the general public. All his children have managed to complete their college education. Accessing affordable credit had been a problem for Don Sergio for many years until he found out about the microfinance institution Fundacion FACES from where he has now received and repaid several loans. His latest application is, as with previous loans, to use to buy inputs such as fertiliser, prepare the land ready for sowing and to help him through the 'dead' season when he is waiting for the harvest to come in. He intends to repay the loan over nine months.
