Remzija

Remzija Delic lives alone in her family home in the community of Potocari near the town of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia. She is a widow. Her husband was killed in the Srebrenica Massacre in 1995. She has four children - all of them are married and live with their families elsewhere, including abroad in the Netherlands, Austria and the USA. Her home was destroyed during the war but she has rebuilt it. Remzija has two greenhouses. In one of them she grows roses - she sells the flowers, and in the other she grows vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and lettuce. She also grows and sells herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Buyers include her friends, neighbours and others in the local community. She also recevies a widow's pension. Outdoors she plants beans and maize also and makes and sells homemade jam. She keeps more than 30 chickens and hens selling their eggs and meat. Despite the fact that she now lives alone she is quite active in local affairs and often hosts community group meetings. She often lobbies the local council if she wants something to change. Her family tend to visit in the summer and she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren. Her entire family usually gather at her home on July 11 each year to commemorate the Srebrenica Massacre. She has sought a loan in order to buy a cow. She would like to sell the milk and make and sell cheese as well. Remzija remains a positive and very active person.
