Mariana Loarte is 52 old and married with eight children - two of whom are under 18. Altogether three children still live at home with her and all three are in full time education. Mariana and her husband worked as small scale farmers for many years. However, when her husband managed to obtain a job in the large local sugar factory, Mariana decided she would focus on raising animals instead of agriculture which is physically hard work. Mainly she raises chickens for their eggs, and guinea pigs as well which are sold for their meat. Mariana and her husband live in their own house which they built. One of her children told her about the microcredit organisation Fundacion FACES and she decided to approach them for a loan. She applied for a loan in order to buy chicks and chicken feed. She sells the eggs and meat to local traders. A large proportion of any profit she makes is for her children's education, she has hopes that they will continue onto university and obtain professional employment. The loan is for eight months.
