María Ruiz is 20 years and single. She lives with her mother. She has brothers but they left home and their whereabouts are unknown. María used to live in a rural community called El Tambo, near the town of Catamayo. Even when she was a student she used to work selling natural herbal products and remedies in her community. However, Maria and her mother decided to move to the town of Catamayo because there might be more economic opportunities as well as better health care for her mother whenever she became ill. Once in town, Maria managed to rent a stall in the market and decided to sell shoes upon the advice of some friends. The business is going well and she applied for a loan in order to increase and add variety to her stock - she wants to buy trainers, sandals and children's shoes. This will make her stall more competitive. Her aim is to eventually have funds to put down a deposit to buy a small house - at the moment Maria and her mother rent just one room where they live. She intends to repay the loan over six months.
