Belgica Vargas is 31 years old and originally from the small town of Olmedo in the province of Loja in southern Ecuador. She now lives in the larger town of Catamayo. She is a widow with four children. She does receive a widow's pension from the state but it is only a relatively small amount and does not cover her household expenditure. She decided therefore to start her own business selling clothes and also plantain and bananas. She has sought an eight month loan from the microfinance organisation Fundacion FACES in order to buy more clothes to sell.
