Phan Soeurng is 33 years old and married with five children. Her eldest child is 12 years old and her youngest is three months old. Her three elder children are currently studying at the local school. Soeurng and her family live in Kampong Preah village, which is in Sangke district, Battambang province. Phan and her husband are farmers and have been farming for the past ten years. At the moment they farm six hectares of rice paddy, which is located close to their home. The yield gives them on average about three tonnes per hectare and they stock about two tonnes for their own consumption. Since they bought a hand tractor six years ago they have been able to reduce some of the costs associated with farming. A part of their farming land can be used to grow rice twice a year. As their source of funds is currently limited, they have sought a loan in order to buy commercial fertiliser, insecticide and weed killer and to buy diesel for their hand tractor and water pump. They plan to pay this loan back over seven months.
