Rolly Cimafranca is 43 years old and married. He lives in the neighbourhood of Poblacion, which is in the town of Alonguisan, Cebu province. He has two dependents who are his 9 and 5 year old nieces. Both of his nieces are currently studying at the local elementary school. Rolly and his 58 year old wife, Rita, manage a grocery store that is located in the nearby public market. This has been their business for the past 11 years and they employ one close relative to assist in the daily selling and arranging of the products. Most of the products they offer are snacks, powdered drinks, sodas and eggs. They also sell a few other goods like nail cutters, nail polish, cotton wool, hygienic products and wallets. Rolly’s store is placed near other vendors in the public market who serve as his competitors, so he always maintains a good volume of stock to keep his business attractive to buyers. His prices are also cheaper than other sari-sari (convenience) stores in other areas. The microfinance organisation, Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative has been supporting his business since he became a member of the institution 11 years ago. Rolly has received 12 previous loan and repaid them all successfully. He has availed a larger loan this time to not only re-stock his grocery store but also to increase the volume of his salable products like snacks and biscuits. His earnings are for the studies of his nieces and he shall deposit a part of it in the savings account he has with Lamac MPC. Rolly dreams of owning a big mart in the future. He intends to repay the loan over twelve months.
